Every year, enormous sums flow across borders as people send money home to families, businesses pay overseas suppliers, and workers support relatives in other countries. Billions in remittances move annually, and for many households these transfers are a lifeline. Yet the experience of sending money internationally has long been slower, more expensive and less transparent than sending it domestically. Understanding why requires looking at the plumbing that actually carries the money.
This article explains the traditional correspondent banking model, the newer blockchain-based rails that aim to improve on it, and the practical trade-offs that determine what a given transfer costs and how quickly it arrives.
The traditional route: correspondent banking
When you send money abroad through the conventional system, your money rarely travels in a straight line. Banks do not maintain direct relationships with every other bank in the world. Instead, they rely on a network of correspondent banks: institutions that hold accounts for one another and pass funds along a chain until the money reaches the recipient's bank.
Messaging standards coordinate the instructions, but the actual movement of value depends on these interbank account relationships. A single transfer might pass through two or three intermediaries, each of which may take a fee and add a delay. Because each institution operates in its own time zone, under its own cut-off times and compliance checks, a transfer that is initiated on Monday may not settle until later in the week.
Why the traditional model adds cost and delay
Several features of correspondent banking explain the friction. Each intermediary in the chain performs its own checks and may deduct charges, so the recipient can receive less than expected. Foreign-exchange conversion is often applied at rates that include a margin, which is a cost that is not always visible up front.
There is also the matter of prefunding. To move money quickly, banks sometimes hold balances in foreign currencies at correspondent institutions, capital that sits idle rather than being put to productive use. And because the chain involves several parties, tracking exactly where a payment is at any moment has historically been difficult, which is why the sender and recipient are often left waiting without clear status. Efforts to modernise messaging have improved traceability, but the underlying multi-party structure remains.
The blockchain alternative
Blockchain-based rails approach the problem differently. Instead of passing money along a chain of correspondent banks, value can be represented as a digital asset, frequently a stablecoin pegged to a major currency, and transferred directly over a shared network. Settlement can occur in minutes rather than days, and because the ledger is common to all participants, the status of a transfer can be visible throughout.
This model can reduce the number of intermediaries and the associated fees, and it can lessen the need for prefunded accounts, because settlement is faster and more direct. It is not a magic solution: the digital asset usually has to be converted into local currency at each end, liquidity for that conversion has to exist, and the whole process must still satisfy the same regulatory obligations as any other cross-border payment. But for many corridors the potential gains in speed, cost and transparency are significant.
Choosing between the rails
Neither model is universally superior. Correspondent banking is deeply established, widely supported and well understood by regulators, which matters for large or complex transactions. Blockchain-based rails can offer speed and lower cost, particularly for smaller or more frequent transfers, but depend on the availability of on-ramps and off-ramps to local currency and on the maturity of the network being used.
For most people the choice is made invisibly by the provider they use. What they experience is the outcome: how long the money takes, how much arrives, and whether they can see where it is along the way.
